Moravec: Songs of Love and War
Vaughan Williams: Dona nobis pacem

Vaughan Williams’ Dona nobis pacem (Grant Us Peace) conjures a poignant atmosphere of loss and reconciliation. Composed in 1936 as a plea for peace at a time when Europe was marching fatefully towards war, the cantata sets the poetry of Walt Whitman to music, embracing the arc of human emotion from despair to hope.

Music brings to life the letters of soldiers and their loved ones in paul Moravec’s Songs of Love and War. The letters—from son to mother, from wife to husband, from a Marine to a comrade’s mother, and from a lieutenant to his wife—span a century of wars from the Civil War to Vietnam. Become immersed in the intimate connections between persons forever altered by war.

Ticket prices (in advance) $20 General, $15 Senior (65+) $5 Students. For more information about the concert, e-mail info@artsdistrictchorale.org or call us at (214) 942-5085.

Rachmaninoff: Vespers (excerpts) with works by Tchaikovsky, Gretchaninoff, Chesnokov and others
The Rachmaninoff Vespers stands at the pinnacle of a Russian choral renaissance launched by composers of the 1880’s New Russian School seeking to create a uniquely Russian sound.

Voices ranging from unison to twelve parts reshape ancient unison chants into a unique and richly orchestrated choral tapestry. Presented in the acoustically vibrant, cathedral-like lobby of the Meyerson Symphony Center, this unusual and uplifting musical event is sure to reverberate in your memory for a long time to come.

Handel’s Israel in Egypt
Plagues of frogs, flies, hail, and fire, Handel brings them vividly to life in his epic oratorio Israel in Egypt. Rarely performed, this dramatization of the biblical story of the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt is entrancing from beginning to end. With dueling choruses, elaborate counterpoint and intricate fugues, Handel captures the passion surrounding the Israelites’ passage from slavery to freedom, skillfully transforming borrowed motifs into a cohesive, singular whole. Passover story. Experience it, and be liberated from all conventional expectations.

Ticket prices (in advance) $20 General, $15 Senior (65+) $5 Students. For more information about the concert, e-mail info@artsdistrictchorale.org or call us at (214) 942-5085.
